In Motion with Dementia project (2023–2024) is a development project aimed at promoting daily physical activity and exercise for individuals with memory impairments and dementia. Additionally, the project seeks to enhance the proficiency of professionals in senior physical activity counseling in facilitating active lifestyle among people with dementia as part of their counseling and guidance work.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Strengthen the capabilities of physical activity counselors to encourage and support individuals with memory impairments and dementia in their daily physical activity and exercise.

  • Increase the interest of people with dementia and their caregivers in promoting brain health and inspire them to engage in regular physical activity, either independently or in various group settings.

The project compiles an information package for physical activity counselors. The package is presented in video format, and it includes guidance on how to meet and communicate with individuals with memory impairments and dementia as well as how to take into account their specific needs. Another information package is tailored for individuals with memory impairments and their caregivers, providing insights into promoting brain health and increasing physical activity in daily life.

The project's outputs will be piloted into work of physical activity counselors in collaboration with the Age Institute, UKK Institute, and the Finnish Bone Health Association during spring of 2024.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
