The Beyond Words (Omin sanoin in Finnish) project focuses on identifying communication support methods suitable for people with dementia and strengthening interaction with them. Our goal is to collect practical methods and develop a model that can help people with dementia express their needs and opinions, enhance their participation, and improve their overall well-being. The use of communication support methods can facilitate a better understanding of the needs of people with dementia by loved ones and other individuals.

To achieve these goals, the project will utilize interdisciplinary expertise and the experiences of people with dementia and their loved ones regarding communication challenges and suitable communication support methods. The methods will be piloted in three rounds to ensure their compatibility with the everyday lives of people with dementia.

The Beyond Words project will use co-development methods to empower people with dementia to have a voice in the project. It also aims to raise awareness of how loved ones and others can adapt their expression and ways of interacting to better communicate with people with dementia.
